I agree that the 2.2 D4D typically returns 42-45mpg in mixed motoring for me in my 2 Avensis estates powered by it. I have read a review of the engine over on Toyota club net and there seems to be an awful lot of pretty expensive common problems listed such as high oil consumption, poor EGR valves, dodgy head gaskets, faulty DPF and 8rZ8h.
